When was the last time you had an oral cancer screening? Many patients don’t know what oral cancer screenings are. At Blissful Dental Spa, they are a part of our regular dental cleanings and exams.
To ensure you are getting oral cancer screenings when you need them, visit our dentist near you, Dr. Chinara Garraway.
Oral cancer screenings are routine checkups done to look for signs of oral cancer. Your dentist will examine your teeth, gums, mouth, and surrounding areas during a screening. We will look for concerning signs, such as bumps.
If you have any alarming signs, we will use a blue dye rinse to highlight the abnormal cells, allowing us to get a better look. The cells are collected with a swab and then sent to a lab. You will receive your results as soon as possible to determine the next steps.
Oral cancer screenings are recommended once every three years for patients 20 and older. Patients 40 and older should have them annually.
In some cases, our dentist might recommend more frequent screenings. For example, if your family has a history of oral cancer or if you have risk factors for oral cancer, you will benefit from additional checkups.
Some patients are at a higher risk of developing oral cancer. The risk factors include tobacco and alcohol use, family history, HPV, excess body weight, poor nutrition, and UV ray exposure.
Men are more likely to get oral cancer than women. Oral cancer risks increase in patients 55 and older. Talk to our dentist if you have any of these risk factors.
